Spotlight On…Anne B Cole’s Souls Entwined

Today’s I’m interviewing fellow Soul Mate Publishing author Anne B Cole about her novel, Souls Entwined.

Souls Entwined

Released April 30, 2014 from Soul Mate Publishing

A Romantic Suspense, Time Travel, YA/NA Novel

Q: How long have you been writing?

A: About four years ago, I found myself without a book at my kids’ swim meet. I love watching my kids swim, but this meet was over five hours long. In between their events, I turned the heat sheet over and jotted down ideas for a story. What started as a hobby grew into an addiction. I carried composition books everywhere, writing a chapter here and there until I had my first draft.

Q: Tell us about your road to publication.

A: I did some research and became a member of Romance Writers of America. Through RWA, I entered four writing contests in 2012. Even though I did not final in any of the four, I received invaluable feedback from the judges. One suggestion by two different judges caught my eye; “Get a critique partner.”

In January of 2013, I posted on a ‘find a critique partner’ site. It worked. Deborah contacted me, and we connected right away. The third member of our critique circle, Joan, joined us soon after. The three of us spent winter and spring reading, critiquing, and sharing thoughts about writing. We also shared life’s ups and downs and became very good friends.

In June, Deborah emailed, asking if it would be okay for her to enter a pitch of my story in the “Pitch your Mate” contest by the Aussie Owned and Read Blog. She had already made it to the editors round with her story in the “Pitch-A-Rama” segment of the contest. Needless to say, I was thrilled when my story, Maledicta, was selected as a finalist and went to the editors’ round.

A day later I received my first two requests; one partial and one full. To say that I was thrilled is an understatement. Two weeks later I received my first rejection from the partial request. Two weeks after that, I received an email from Soul Mate Publishing saying they liked my book so much they wanted to publish it!

More good news came the following month when Deborah received a contract from a different publisher. Together, with Joan cheering us on, we released our first novels in April 2014. Three Wishes by Deborah Kreiser released on April 15th and Souls Entwined by me, Anne B. Cole released on April 30th. Yep, my title changed but the story didn’t.

Q: What advice would you give an aspiring author?

A: My advice to aspiring authors…Enter Aussie Owned and Read’s Pitch-A-Rama contest next year. It runs in June. And if you have a critique partner…Pitch your mate. They will forever love you for it. It worked for me. It can work for you!

Spotlight On…Anna James’ Keeping Her Guilty Secret

Today I’m interviewing fellow Soul Mate Publishing author Anna James about her novella, Keeping Her Guilty Secret.

Q: How long have you been writing?

A: I’ve been writing contemporary romance stories for years and finally published in 2010. Since then, I’ve published 2 novels, 5 novellas and 1 short story.

Q: Tell us about your road to publication.

A: My first romance was published in 2010 with a small press publisher. I went on to publish four more stories with the same small press and three other stories with another small press. KEEPING HER GUILTY SECRET is my 8th publication.

Q: What advice would you give an aspiring author?

A: Keep at it and NEVER, EVER, give up on yourself.

Q: Tell us about your latest release.

A: Keeping Her Guilty Secret is book 1 of my Forever Yours Trilogy. It’s about learning to trust again. It’s full of passion, romance, mystery and suspense.

Passion ignites between Nicole Bradford and Max Paradis the moment they lay eyes on each other, but despite the sizzling attraction and Max’s to-die-for-kisses, Nicole is reluctant to get involved. She’s been burned by love before.
Carlo had been her ideal mate but the dream became a nightmare when his drug smuggling past was revealed.
Now all Nicole wants is to get on with her life and keep the secret she’s been hiding for the last six years.
Still, how can she resist the handsome and sexy Max when he’s everything she’s ever wanted in a man? And what will she do when Carlo returns and threatens to expose her ugly past?
Nicole will have to trust Max with the truth if she wants to win his love and get Carlo out of her life for good. If she doesn’t Carlo could destroy everything that matters most to her.

Nicole finished tying an apron around her waist as she rushed toward the table. “What can I get for you this evening?”
The man lowered his menu.
Nicole started to sweat. No! It can’t be. But, oh god, it was. She’d recognize him anywhere with his black, slicked-back hair and dark aviator sunglasses, the gold rope chains draped around his thick neck and the long-sleeved shirt with the top four buttons undone to showcase his wide, hairy chest.
“Hello, baby. Long time no see.”
Not long enough. “What do you want?”
His eyes wandered down her body, back up, and came to rest on her breasts. She felt the chilly slime of his leer as he said, “Whadda ya say? One last fuck for old times’ sake?”
Her stomach heaved. She shoved a fist in her mouth to stop the bile from rising up.
Idiot, her brain sneered.
Yes, idiot pretty much summed it up. Carlo was yet another example of her lousy taste in men. Only he’d cost her more than a broken heart.
Much more.
Lord, what had she ever seen in him? She’d been young, impetuous, and carefree. Caught up in the glamour and mystique that was the fashion industry. Carlo had been fun and exciting. If only she’d looked past his suave exterior, maybe she would have seen the danger. Instead, she’d jumped in feet first.
It had been the same with Joe, too, and even Henry. They’d seemed perfect. They weren’t, of course. The signs had been there with both, but that impulsive part of her had plunged in without a second thought.
“Not in this lifetime or any other.”
“You might want to rethink that. Six years locked behind bars makes a man a little desperate. It would serve you well to remember that.”
A shudder ran through her. I won’t let him intimidate me. I won’t let him intimidate me. She repeated the mantra over and over, forcing herself to remain cool and composed. “You don’t scare me.”
He lunged across the table and she almost fell in her haste to get away. His bark of laughter echoed in her ears and had her stopping in mid-stride. Get a hold of yourself. He’d be crazy to try anything in a crowded restaurant. One scream from her and the manager would come running. She turned back and glowered down at his still-laughing face. “What-do-you-want?”
His expression sobered. “The way I figure it, you owe me and—”
Her eyes rounded. “I. Owe. You? Are you high, or what?”
“You cost me everything,” he sneered. “And now it’s time to pay up. I want twenty-five thousand dollars in cash or I’ll tell everyone your dirty little secret.”

Anna James writes heartwarming contemporary stories with strong, confident heroes and heroines who conquer life’s trials and live happily ever after. She has been writing professionally since 2010, is a member of RWA, CTRWA (Connecticut Romance Writers of America), CORW (Charter Oak Romance Writers) and RWA Contemporary Romance Writers. Publishing credits include two category length novels, five novellas and one short story.
Anna is married to a wonderful husband who spends countless hours picking up the slack around the house so she can pursue her dream of writing, and is the proud mother of five fabulous children.
Although she’s lived in several locations throughout her life she now calls Connecticut home. When not writing, she can be found spending time with family and friends.

Spotlight On…Stacy Hoff’s Desire in the Everglades!

Today I’m featuring fellow Soul Mate Publishing author Stacy Hoff’s novel, Desire in the Everglades.

Q: How long have you been writing?

A: Ever since I could hold a pencil. I got serious about writing professionally about seven years ago. I figured out pretty quickly I needed help, assuming all the rejection letters I received were any indication. I kept hearing the same comments from agents and editors—I had good story concepts and strong characters, but my writing needed some work. So I joined the Connecticut Chapter of Romance Writers of America (CTRWA) to learn what I needed to do—how to correctly pace my story, stay in POV, develop my character arc, and create believable dialogue. I still learn from my group, and go to classes once a month.

Q: Tell us about your road to publication.

A: CTRWA was hosting a large conference last year (Fiction Fest 2013) with agents and editors ready and willing to hear our pitches. I was lucky enough to pitch to Deborah Gilbert, Founder and Senior Editor of Soul Mate Publishing, Inc. Debby was great, telling me to breathe deep and take my time as I pitched, which really calmed me down. It’s amazing I was so nervous; I’m an attorney, so you’d think I would have been more confident. But writing is personal to me, so getting out the words was tough. Way harder than representing someone else.

Q: What advice would you give an aspiring author?
Easy. Join a writing group. Now. It’s not hard to find one, just Google an RWA chapter near you.

Q: Tell us about your latest release.

A: I watch so many survival and reality TV shows, I’m not real surprised I got inspired to write a book about one. It’s only the framework for the story, but it made it really fun to write.

Q: Any new books in the works?

A: I just signed a contract for another book with Soul Mate Publishing, Inc. DIARY OF A YOUNG LAWYER will be out soon. I’m looking forward to its release!

Stephanie Lang’s successful career as a television producer can’t give her everything she wants out of life. Her personal goals of writing a romance novel, and finding true love, languish. Emotionally scarred by her fiancé’s affair with her cousin, she doesn’t have the confidence to go after either goal again.
At least she has professional confidence to fall back on; she is ready to produce the company’s next hit show. But when her boss reveals what the show is about, a survival documentary starring a sexy, modern version of Crocodile Dundee, Stephanie’s life is turned upside down.
Colin Brandt, billed as “The Evergladiator,” will tackle Florida’s Everglades with just his bare hands and a knife. Stephanie, instantly attracted to handsome, rugged, enigmatic Colin, worries he will not survive his twelve-day odyssey. If he does, he’ll win a million dollars. If he fails, his beloved family’s farm will go into foreclosure. Can Colin conquer the Everglades? And can he conquer her heart?

Chapter 1
“Did I hear you right?” Stephanie Lang sputtered. “You’re saying our next reality TV series is about a modern day ‘Crocodile Dundee’ guy. Only sexier.” Could her job get any more insane? Thankfully, the big fancy desk the Teleworld Broadcasting Company bestowed concealed her shaky hands and white knuckles.
Her boss nodded with enthusiasm.
She cleared her throat, enlarging the gateway for her stuck, strangled words. “I’m having a hard time believing this, Mark. You want croc guy to tackle the Everglades. Alone. For twelve days. No camping or hunting equipment allowed and only a knife to protect himself. That’s what you’re seriously proposing?”
“That’s right. Though we’ll let him use more than a knife.” Mark stopped nodding and let loose a large grin. “He can always use his bare hands.”
Stephanie wanted to use her bare hands, too. Wrapping them tightly around Mark’s neck. Was this guy kidding, or what? Stifling a sigh, she garnered her patience and tried to look at the bright side. Mark was less stuffy than the other executives, which was good. Not afraid to crack a joke. Also good. Not concerned about anybody but himself. Bad. Very bad. And he steamrolled people to get his way. Much, much worse.
She hoped he didn’t steamroll her now, because this idea was plain old crazy. Seriously whack-a-doodle. “Is this show going to be safe to shoot?” she asked tenuously. If she showed too much emotion, she would join the thousands of New Yorkers standing on the unemployment line waving pink slips. Teleworld did not welcome emotional reactions to their business directives.
“Of course it’ll be safe to shoot,” he answered breezily. “We’re not even having our crew film it. Once they set up the cameras, we’re outta there. Of course, while they’re setting them up, there will be some risk. We’ll make sure they’re protected as best as can be reasonably expected.”
Cringing, she tried to ignore the word “reasonably.” Worst. Qualifier. Ever. Before this meeting was over, her whole body would be twitching. “I meant whether this was going to be safe for the guy we’re filming. He’ll be the one left out there, unprotected.”
“Dunno. Luckily, that’s not our problem. The guy’s willing to take the gamble, so I guess it’ll be safe enough. He’d know best how to calculate his player handicap.”
“This isn’t a round of leisurely golf. I don’t want this guy to wind up handicapped at all.”
